Government Initiatives in Agriculture

Sugar

Investors benefit from waivers of Import Duty and VAT on machinery, agrochemicals, irrigation, and drainage equipment, along with reversed fees for drainage and irrigation services and land rent.

Corn and Soya

Ongoing development of the Tacama Processing Facility includes infrastructural works on the access road and wharf, while up to 85,000 acres of land are available for allocation in the Intermediate Savannah (Ebini).

Coconuts (Milk, flour, Oil and Waste)

Free chemicals are distributed for pest and disease control, alongside research and development initiatives focused on producing clean planting materials through embryo technology and utilizing coconut by-products to create biochar and potting mixtures.

Coffee

Distribution of high-quality planting materials is complemented by farmer training programs and the introduction of new germplasms, including Liberica and Arabica coffee varieties across Regions 1, 2, 4, and 9.

Poultry

Vaccinations are provided for baby chicks to reduce costs by up to $3 per chick, while the Guyana Livestock Development Authority (GLDA) continues to enhance its services through the equipping of its nutrition laboratory.

Agro Processing

Import Duty and VAT waivers are granted on machinery, equipment, motor vehicles, tools, and supplies for agro-processing activities, including seafood processing and farming operations. Additionally, cold storage hubs powered by solar energy are being established nationwide to minimize post-harvest losses and preserve product quality.

Livestock

The Black Belly Sheep Project, backed by a US$3 million government investment, aims to strengthen the national gene pool. Simultaneously, GLDA's Genetic Improvement Programme has imported 64 breeding bulls from Texas and launched an Embryo Transfer Programme.

Seafood & Fisheries

Aquaculture initiatives focus on expanding prawn, brackish water shrimp, and tambaqui cage farming, especially in hinterland regions. In support, the Government has developed over 300 acres of ponds, installed 50 cages, and established a fish feed mill at Mon Repos.
