Strategic Initiatives for Trade and Development

Food Export

Expansion into high-value crops, fisheries, and livestock exports, supported by trade agreements.

Trade Infrastructure

Guyana is strengthening its trade infrastructure through major road and bridge expansion projects, including the Corentyne River Bridge and the Palmyra to Moleson Creek Highway, to improve cross-border connectivity. The country is also expanding international air travel capacity, offering over 30,000 weekly seats and introducing new long-haul routes from global carriers. In addition, port modernization and logistics development initiatives are enhancing regional trade efficiency and streamlining cargo movement.

Regional Trade Agreements

Guyana’s active participation in regional trade agreements provides significant advantages for businesses and investors. As a member of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM), the country benefits from favorable trade protocols that allow the free movement of goods, services, and labor across member nations. Additionally, through the Economic Partnership Agreement (EPA) with the European Union, Guyana enjoys duty-free and quota-free access to EU markets for a wide range of products, including artisanal crafts and agricultural goods that support the tourism industry.

Bilateral Trade Agreements

Guyana’s bilateral trade agreements open new avenues for economic growth and international collaboration. The Guyana–Brazil Partial Scope Agreement reduces tariff barriers on selected goods, encouraging the expansion of tourism-related services and products between the two countries. Similarly, the Guyana–China Trade Agreement promotes increased commerce through preferential trade terms, which are expected to boost Chinese tourist arrivals and stimulate investment in tourism-related infrastructure.

Airline Expansions

Guyana’s air connectivity is rapidly expanding, with over 30,000 seats now available each week thanks to new services from United Airlines, American Airlines, Sky High, LIAT, and Avianca. In addition, discussions are underway with a prestigious luxury travel company to invest in premium eco-tourism, further enhancing the country’s appeal as a high-value travel destination.

Hospitality Training

The Ministry of Tourism, Industry & Commerce, in collaboration with the Guyana Tourism Authority, has launched the Coursera Tourism, Entrepreneurship, and Competitiveness Training Platform to strengthen skills in the tourism and hospitality sectors. As part of the National Training Initiative, this program builds capacity across multiple industries and raises service standards nationwide. By providing specialized training that combines practical skills with theoretical knowledge, it empowers participants to excel in their roles and contribute to the growth of Guyana’s tourism industry.

Telecommunication Liberalization

Since 2020, the cost of bandwidth was reduced by 95% (from US$950 per megabit to US$50 or lower) to attract ICT investments.

Telecommunication Training

The One Guyana Digital School initiative is introducing advanced digital learning platforms for Grades 10 and 11 students, aligned with the CSEC curriculum, to strengthen the country’s education system and prepare youth for a technology-driven future. Complementing this effort, the Guyana Coursera National Training Partnership has already trained 12,380 individuals in areas such as data analysis, leadership, patient care, and software development, equipping the workforce with valuable skills for the growing digital economy.
